Viennetta – a Blast from the Past!

OMG, Viennetta – a total blast from the past! Viennetta ice cream cake was a treat my family would share on various occasions in the ’90s. Sure, it reminds me of layers of cool whip with magic shell, but the touch of design with the vanilla ice cream swirls and cocoa brushed on the top makes it special in addition to the nostalgia.

Spotted at a Safeway

I went on my weekly grocery shopping trip, and the Viennetta cake caught my eye. It was not on sale, but I had to get it for nostalgic purposes.

What I Remembered

I did not remember the taste of Viennetta (it may have been Breyer’s Vienetta when I had it as a child, but I did not enjoy Breyer’s ice cream [was more of a Dreyer’s girl]), but I did remember part of the Viennetta commercial. The commercial showed Viennetta served in glass stemware. It looked so nice and fancy to me back in the ’90s that I convinced my family to serve the cake that way. They thought I was crazy, so I cut myself a slice and put it in a fancy glass for myself as they weren’t interested.

Forgotten

Viennetta’s look was very memorable, but the taste and the cake itself was forgotten. I did not think about it crave it during those decades of no Viennetta at the local grocery stores. Combining layers of ice cream and magic shell seemed easy enough to do to make a Viennetta cake, but it wasn’t something I thought about until I saw it at Safeway (such a gem, found my jam advent calendar there too).

Packaging

Dessert in a rectangular box! The Viennetta ice cream cake is packaged in a white wrap in a cardboard box. The ice cream cake itself sits on a plastic tray, which is both convenient (sits on something) and inconvenient (bottom layer tends to get stuck during cake slicing).

Best Enjoyed in One Sitting

Each box of Viennetta “serves” 6, and it seems best to be enjoyed in a single sitting. The packaging does not allow the cake to be covered and protected well. Leftovers can be wrapped up or placed in a container, but that requires more product.

The Satisfying Crunch

I enjoy cutting into the Viennetta ice cream cake. The crunch from the chocolate layered bits is extremely satisfying as the knife goes through smoothly, yet producing the crunch sounds.

Taste and Texture

My parents and grandparents shared Viennetta with me when I was a kid, and now I’m sharing Viennetta with my kids. Both my kids enjoyed it, and I did too. I think I enjoy it more now, though it really does remind me of cool whip and layers of magic shell. The texture is smooth with some texture from the chocolate.

More Viennetta? (and Final Comments)

I heard Viennetta came in other flavors, so hopefully this reboot will include other flavors in the near future. It’s cheaper than very tasty ice cream cakes, and it won’t take much room in the freezer. Win win!
