Mochidoki – Mochi Ice Cream Shipped to You!
I had the pleasure to receive a box of Strawberry Mochidoki mochi ice creams as a gift last Christmas, and it was pretty nice so I tried another box in January 2021. This is my belated Mochidoki review.
What is Mochidoki?
Mochidoki is mochi ice cream, where a bit of ice cream is in the center of rice cake dough. The mochi itself is soft and pillowy, but it is a bit hard when frozen. The combo of mochi and ice cream is amazing in both flavor and texture. Mochidoki itself allows you to order various mochi ice cream packages for a hefty sum, and I heard they have a storefront in New York.
Ordering Process and Packaging
Pretty easy. They ask for a zip code to ship, and you can proceed when it’s within their delivery range. Add to cart, select delivery date, and check out. Very simple.
Their packaging is HUGE. One single of of these mochi ice creams comes in a very large cardboard box. There is a lot of dry ice in there to keep the mochidoki ice creams frozen. The ice creams come in a box, further protected by a separate plastic bag. Very protected as both my boxes arrived without damage. I do feel bad about the amount of packaging though.. more than those meal prep packagings!
Strawberry Mochidoki Review
Strawberry was the first mochidoki mochi I tried. An amazing coworker gifted me the box, and I was hooked. They are a bit similar to Trader Joe’s mochi ice cream, with the mochi portion and ice cream portion with more cohesion. The mochi was rather cold when we got it, so we thawed it out a little before we dug in. It had both great texture and flavor! Everyone in the fam (other than my son at times) enjoys strawberry, so this was a perfect flavor for us!
Thawing and Freezing
These became not so hard rather quickly, which was a surprise since they were frozen solid. They were easy to take out and put on a plate. We placed the remaining ones back in the freezer and dug in here and there.
Pretty Good Ratio
I personally love mochi by itself, and I always wish there was more mochi in these things, but Mochidoki does a good ratio. The layer of mochi is clearly visible to give this lil treat some good and noticeable chew.
Back for More
We ordered Mochidoki’s signature flavors the month afterwards. Look at that colorful goodness! Per their website, the flavors are – MATCHA, RED BEAN, VANILLA CHIP, CHOCOLATE, PASSION FRUIT – VEGAN, LYCHEE – VEGAN, BLACK SESAME, UBE, SALTED CARAMEL, STRAWBERRY, ESPRESSO, COCONUT – VEGAN.
Signature Flavors Review
I enjoyed most of these! The only one I did not enjoy was the salted caramel because I typically don’t like salted caramel or caramel in general. Red bean, black sesame, and espresso were my favorites. The vegan lychee and passionfruit ones had a different texture, not as creamy, and those were tart in a good way.
Pricing and Such
Well, these were $60 for 24 pieces in early 2021 and in 2020. I check today (later part of 2021), and the signature box is now $70. Wow, a $10 price increase!!
Worth It?
Price-wise, probably not so much. $70/24 = close to $3 a piece!! The cost probably goes into shipping, but there’s so much packaging involved. Some markets have these that average under $1.50 a piece, so if you’re going for one or a small number of flavors, it makes more sense financially to buy that way. The convenience makes mochidoki worth it, as well as the variety items. Well, there you go… my Mochidoki review and feedback.
