SusieCakes Summer Berry Cake Review – Worth the Significant Price Difference?
I’ve had SusieCakes since over a decade ago as I was introduced by it through my first job out of college. There was a SusieCakes nearby work and most birthday cakes we got were from SusieCakes. Very special occation cakes came from Sweet Lady Jane. Oh how I missed SLJ!
My family and I have tried a variety of SusieCakes cakes, from their vanilla celebration cake, red velvet, marble, coconut, lemon, and a variety of their cupcakes. They are mostly frosting heavy, a bit too sweet for us. As it was my daughter’s birthday and our typical bakery was on vacation, we decided to go with SusieCakes since it was close by our place and it’s been a while since we’ve had Susie Cakes.
Cake Pricings
SusieCakes cakes used to be under $40 for the longest time for their 6 inch cakes. I suppose since the recent super inflation, they did a significant price increase as well.
Summer Berry Cake – Seasonal
SusieCakes has some seasonal cakes, such as their candy cane chocolate one around Christmas (pretty good for chocolate cake!!), and they have a summer berry one through early September. It sounds really good – light vanilla cake with strawberries and chantilly cream. It’s so different compared to their other cakes. Their other cakes are on the denser side and overly sweet. Those cakes don’t need to be refrigerated, but the summer berry cake does because of the whipped cream based frosting.
Birthday Girl’s Pick
Somehow I thought the daughter would pick the vanilla celebration cake because of the colors, but she ended up picking the plain white looking cake – the summer berry cake. Ouch… why did she have to pick the one that was over $10 more than their nornal cakes?
Impressions on the Summer Berry Cake
Looks wise, very plain. Over $60 for such a small cake is just so expensive. We paid closer to $50 for a 9 inch cake from Tous Les Jours (their mango cloud cake) the other week for my grandmother’s birthday. Our typical bakery, Masse’s Pastries in Berkeley, has really delicious and good looking cakes for under $50 (and that is with their recent price increase!).
Instructions
Refrigerate until serving time. So different from their other cakes.
Texture
It was rather light indeed! Their other cakes are rather dense, so this one was more prone to collapse when cutting into it. The cake inside was very soft and very light in comparison to other SusieCakes cakes. The frosting was more of a whipped cream so it wasn’t sweet in comparison to their other cakes with “regular” frosting.
Taste?
We all loved how it wasn’t too sweet!! The inside portions was pretty good – light, refreshing, though some cake portions tasted a bit floury. My husband enjoys the thick super sugary frosting in comparison to the lighter chantilly whipped stuff, so he wasn’t so fond of that portion, but I loved it.
Worth It?
I do like this cake better than other SusieCake cakes; however, is it worth $60+? Not really if there are other options around. It does taste good and is my favorite SusieCakes cake, but omg… $60 for a small plain looking cake? Charge for writing? I’ll prob just get it again if I’m in a rush for a cake, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.
