Trader Joe’s Black Tea and Boba Ice Cream Review
It’s been a while since I’ve found a pint of Trader Joe’s ice cream worth blogging about. The most recent one I tried before this one is their Okie Dokie caramel swirl with spongey candy bits (a non dairy oat based ice cream), but my distaste for caramel would be too biased in a negative way to write something more meaningful. Anyways, a prior boba ice cream post talked about TJ’s coffee ice cream with boba, and they came out with a new one – black tea and boba ice cream!
The Intriguing Portion
Black tea ice cream sounds pretty interesting itself, regardless of where it comes from. I haven’t seen black tea ice cream much at stores lately, so I was rather excited to see it at the Trader Joe’s in San Ramon! Our local TJ’s ran out of hash browns, and we were out in San Ramon so we popped into their TJ’s, and they were out too, but they had this ice cream, so yay! I love my black tea and boba, not too sweet. This ice cream is non dairy, so the husband can try some without taking pills. Awesome.
Expectations
Based on it being black tea and boba ice cream (or non-dairy dessert in this case), I expected it to taste like a milk tea with boba. I also expect it to taste a bit watered down due to the lack of natural creaminess from actual cream.
Nutrition and Such
Contains coconut! The coconut flavor is extremely subtle, even my daughter that doesn’t like coconut taste thought this dessert was decent. It’s vegan and dairy free, but that doesn’t mean this is a healthy food. 3 servings per container and each serving is 240 Calories with 5g fat and quite a bit of sugar.
Taste and Worth It?
I had low expectations and ended up enjoying this non dairy dessert more than I thought! The prior oat based ice cream I tried tasted very much of oat, so I appreciated that this one didn’t have that coconut milk flavor. It tasted like actual black tea with some artificial sweeteners in there. That’s the part I didn’t enjoy – the artificial sweetness flavor of it all. Otherwise, it was quite nice the refreshing. It was sweet-ish, but yet a bit creamy as well. The pearls added some nice texture throughout, a bit more helpful of a contribution compared to the boba in TJ’s coffee coconut milk with boba ice cream. TJ’s pints aren’t cheap, but I’d say this one is more worth it than not.
