Trader Joe’s Tres Leches Cake Review – My First Frozen One!
November 23, 2022/Comments Off on Trader Joe’s Tres Leches Cake Review – My First Frozen One!
I love tres leches cake, but have been super lazy in baking them lately. Saw the frozen one at Trader Joe’s and decided to go for it.
Why Tres Leches?
3 Milks! Typically regular/whole, condensed, and evaporated. The milks are usually mixed together and poured onto the sponge cake itself to give it amazing subtlety sweet flavor and moisture. It’s also topped with cream and cinnamon.
The Packaging
Now to really get into my Trader Joe’s tres leches cake review… the packaging is rather nice. Appealing with the photo of the cake, and the interior is rather steady. The thick cardboard box is amazing. It keeps the cake in place and it can be unfolded and folded back, so technically, you can cut the cake on this cardboard and fold it back up if there are leftovers.
Holy Moly – Do Fresh Tres Leches Cake Have This Much Cholesterol??
WOWOWOOW, over half of the daily recommended cholesterol in one serving of the tres leches cake. It must be from all that milk, condensed milk, cream, etc.
Frozen
I actually had this cake in the freezer for a while and really wanted cake, but didn’t thaw this cake. It was to be thawed in the fridge overnight or kept out with the plastic wrap still on for 4 hours or so.
Impressed with the Box – Not Too Much Stuck On
It was really nice that the box didn’t tear the cake apart when unfolding to flatten out the cardboard. The cardboard is thick and sturdy and the cake can be served directly. It folds back up into a box easily as well.
Initial Taste and Such
I guess this wasn’t bad for a frozen cake. It isn’t too sweet, but there is that banana flavor, though it was really subtle. It seems it was from the condensed milk so it makes sense. I used TJ’s cinnamon (thank goodness I had some cause I need cinnamon on my tres leches cakes). Impatient me also ate some of this still frozen, but the banana taste was still there after it thawed properly. Not bad though.
Worth It?
Again, it isn’t bad. I’ve had worse frozen cakes. If you’re looking for something like tres leches, this would be a good option, though if you’re looking for a specific type of tres leches or super fresh kinds, then no. Some tres leches cake has some of that milk soak / liquid on the bottoms or it oozes out when cutting into the cake. This didn’t have that, though the bottoms look like it does depending on the angle. I probably would get off my lazy behind and go to the store to buy the milks and bake my tres leches before buying this again, but all that cholesterol… and my numbers are pretty high up there.
