Claudio Corallo / Alegio Chocolate – Pricey, but Worth It!
Close to $30 for 160g of “Sliced” Chocolate
That’s right, a small box of Alegio Chocolates cost close to $30 for just 160g of chocolate. A Hershey’s Symphony large bar is 192g for a fraction of the price. I enjoy those bars (not the regular Hershey’s bars), but I love the luxury of Alegio chocolate.
How I Heard About Alegio Chocolate
Their About page is here. Also, their shop page is here. I heard about Alegio Chocolate from my brother! The family received a box as a gift and my brother was immediately impressed by the 75% chocolate. He tried some others, but the 75% was his absolute favorite. The family enjoy a “slice” of chocolate with a beverage. Something about it just hits different compared to other chocolates.
Store Fronts
There is a store front in Palo Alto, CA. There used to be one in Berkeley years ago, but that one closed down unfortunately. Berkeley was where the family would buy Alegio chocolates. It was sad that the Berkeley store closed, so they haven’t had the good chocolate in years.
Shipping Exists!
That’s the good news… Alegio Chocolate has a website and they ship some of their products. They have chocolate tasting for an in-store experience and a lot more, but fortunately, the chocolate my brother enjoys is available for shipping! The down side is shipping cost $15. That was what deterred him (and the fam) from ordering Alegio Chocolate online.
The Maths
It costs more than $15 for gas, the 1+ hour time, crossing the bridge, etc., than $15. That’s the sad truth. Whatever, I ordered several items from Alegio the same day I had a few glasses of wine.
Ordering/Shipping Process/Packaging
Pretty straight forward, typical online shopping. I wonder if the shipping cost deters a lot of people from buying chocolate from them. They ship via USPS and it arrived in a few days. There’s a sticker on the box that says “chocolate, perishable,” and thank goodness for delivery notifications since I wouldn’t want chocolate to sit outside in such a hot day. The packaging was SO LOVELY. I’m going to post another photo below since the top just isn’t enough.
Beautiful Wax Seal
The chocolate boxes were wrapped in orange tissue paper, tired with black and white string, sealed with a nice wax seal. Lovely!! So glad they made the packaging look nice since shipping wasn’t free and a small amount of chocolate is rather pricey.
Instructions
LOL, yup… the chocolate comes with instructions because these chocolates can do a lot more than being consumed as is. They let you know that you can use it to make hot chocolate / drinking chocolate. So interesting!
More Wax Seals
There was an envelope sealed with another wax seal and it contains an article about Sao Tome and Principe growing premium cocoa in fragile topical soil. Premium chocolate right here!
What I Ordered
1 box, 10 boxes, same shipping cost. I ordered 5 boxed –
- 3 boxes of the 75% – all for my family.
- 1 box of the cocoa nibs chocolate – for me and my kids, etc.
- 1 box of the 100% chocolate – hey, I like the creaminess and bitterness of it.
The boxes are very well made and so adorable. It just looks and feel so special, something a generic candy bar may or may not have. These definitely have it! It comes with a small thingy with another wax seal. So gorgeous!
Nutrition
They have nutritional labels on the side of the boxes. The 100% has the highest Calories. 100g (not even 2 servings!!) contains 649 Calories with 59.4% fat, 12.6g carbs, and 9.3g protein. The 75% contains 607 Calories with 49.8g fat, 26.6g carbs, and 6.5g protein. Dense stuff, but not much of it.
Inside Packaging
So beautiful too! The boxes are well worth keeping to store little things in there. The chocolates are wrapped nicely, each sliced not too evenly, but each consistent on deliciousness.
Best Enjoyed
I love it with some tea or some coffee. It’s best enjoyed with a clean pallette, enjoyed alone or with a beverage. I haven’t tried making the hot chocolate or drinking chocolate yet since I’m lazy and I enjoy the chocolate by itself.
