Milk Bar Strawberry Shortcake Cake – My Family’s Thoughts (Too Sweet!)

Strawberry Shortcake Cake but on a whole new level: vanilla cake layered with silky sweet cream frosting, thick, tangy ribbons of strawberry jam, and buttery shortcake crumbs.

Milk Bar Strawberry Shortcake Cake! Look at all those layers on top… so beautiful with all those layers showing and not hidden. *Drools*

Why Not The Birthday Cake?

I think Milk Bar’s birthday cake is one of the most attractive naked-layered cakes. There are several photos in the Milk Bar cookbooks and I kept staring at the birthday cake images. I’ve made the milk bar birthday cake before and tried a slice from an actual Milk Bar location (both DC and Vegas). My daughter loves strawberry so we decided to try out Milk Bar’s delivery and ordered the 6 inch milk bar strawberry shortcake cake.

Ordering Process and Shipping

The ordering process was fairly easy. They recommend selecting a date a couple days before you need the cake in case there are delivery mishaps. I ordered the cake to ship to my parents’ place because we will be having the cake there, and the cake arrived on the day we selected so they placed the cake in the fridge or freezer till that day (a couple days in the fridge is fine, can be frozen for a good amount of time though).

Packaging

I did not unpack the cake, unfortunately; however, I was told that the box was rather large in comparison to the cake’s size. Above photo shows the cake wrapped up. The layers are visible!

Math, Servings, and Nutrition

The cake’s top had a cardboard along with its nutritional facts and ingredients list. Milk Bar’s 6 inch cake supposedly serves groups of 8 – 12 people (header photo taken from their website), but their nutrition label lists 18 servings for the 6 inch cake. Hmmm… and each serving is 80 grams with 290 Calories that’s comprised of 15g fat, 36g carbs, and 3g protein. The whole cake is listed at 1880 grams, and 1880/80 is 23.5, so I’m a bit confused there… does the net weight count more than just the cake, or are there really more than 18 “servings” here? Or a serving is actually more than 80 grams. I’d thought there would be 8 – 12 servings, but 18 servings mean a group of 8 – 12 people would have more than 1 serving of cake assuming the whole cake is consumed and divided equally. Interesting stuff… ok, I digress.

Pretty Good Delivery

The cardboard part was lifted, and above shows the top. Shortcake crumbs / cake truffles? So beautiful! Delivery was a definitely success!

Unwrap That Acetate Paper!

Above photo shows after the acetate removal. Layers are still intact.

Taste and Such

We had other desserts so we were able to cut a bit over 20 small slices from this cake. Everyone thought it was way too sweet! The cake portion is a vanilla cake, and the moisture probably comes from some sugar water base soak that other milk bar cakes have. Delicious, but really sweet. The sweet cream frosting and jam are even sweeter! Shortcake crumbs gives the cake a nice texture. Most of us weren’t able to finish the small slice they received because it was just way too sweet. I ate all the cake portion, but left behind most of the sweet cream and jam layers. Texture was pretty good, as expected. We would have all liked this cake more if it were just significantly less sweet.

We Tried Cookies Too

There was a free shipping deal if you spent more than a certain amount so I added half a dozen cornflake chocolate marshmallow cookies to my order. These cookies are pretty good, though very buttery. Is that what makes it good? I love the chewy marshmallows in these. These cookies were not as sweet as the cake.

More on the Sweetness

My brother made Gordon Ramsay’s sticky toffee pudding. All the guests really liked this dessert, with the sauce and all. It was way less sweet than the milk bar strawberry shortcake cake which was surprising because the sticky toffee pudding I tried at Gordon’s restaurant seemed sweeter than the homemade version.

Final Comments

I still think Milk Bar’s cakes are super beautiful! They are such a delight to look at, especially with the various layers and how high the cake is stacked. The interior holds the layers too. Pricing is standard compared to delicious bakery cakes, and delivery and ordering was a breeze. It was just a shame how sweet the cake we got was though… just extremely sweet. My dad probably this was another money waste, but at least the fam can now say they’ve tried a cake from Milk Bar!
