Stumptown Coffee – Subscription Review (and my Coffee for the past Year!)

Work and coffee shops have been my coffee source when I was working in the office, but since the pandemic, I bought a coffee maker and tried out a variety of coffee beans, and the Stumptown coffee subscription has been my favorite so far. Actually, not the subscription alone, but more so their beans.

My Intro to Stumptown Coffee

A former coworker 8 years ago told me about it. She mentioned that her significant other at the time really liked Stumptown coffee. Fast forward 6-7 years after that until I tried it out for myself.

Starting the Stumptown Coffee Subscription

Stumptown’s “main” coffee is their Hairbender, and they can send a sample of their Hairbender coffee before the actual subscription starts. My subscription started with their Hairbender coffee for $15 a month. They would mail a 12oz bag of freshly roasted coffee beans every 2 weeks. The beans smelled so darn good each time! Mmmm!!

Eventually Switched Subscription

I love variety and didn’t want to get the Hairbender coffee every 2 weeks so I switched over to their Roasters Pick subscription. Their Roasters Pick subscription would send one of their “premium” roasts each time and they would change, so most likely you would not receive consecutive bags of the same coffee beans.

Not A Constant Rotation

Above images show some Stumptown coffee subscription from their Roasters Pick. There are some that I’d get more often than others. The 12oz bag of this would cost $20 each time, which was slightly a bit more than I’d like to pay. It was really good at first because I got to try many types of their coffees, but then some issues arose.

Various Issues

Shipping issues happened once a while where my beans would be stuck and not get to me until way after my bag of coffee was done, so I’d go out to buy other coffee beans to satisfy my coffee needs. The roasters pick coffee was $20 a month, but Stumptown would have various sales of 30% off for their beans. I could just order several of those for cheaper overall, so I canceled my subscription and started to order beans separately from them. The downside was that the beans aren’t as fresh as they sit around as opposed to fresh beans every time from their subscription. I drink so much coffee that my bags of beans don’t sit for that long so it’s alright.

Nothing Against Stumptown Coffee Subscription

Their subscription service is pretty simple. They keep shipping to you and charging your card and send you notifications. Canceling and pausing is also a breeze. You can change your subscription easily too. The pause feature is pretty nice in case you go away for a while or receive a lot of coffee beans as a holiday gift and need to pause for a bit of time so that the fresh coffee beans don’t sit for longer than anticipated.

My Faves, Etc

I drink my coffee with some creamer or just black most of the time, and Stumptown’s coffee has distinct flavors that go with either. Unfortunately I don’t remember the flavor profiles of each coffee I tried, but I can say that some coffees would taste better black and some better with some creamer. There was one that tasted better after it cooled down. Pretty interesting stuff. I’ve tried nearly all their coffees on their website and there wasn’t a single one where I thought was completely disgusting.
