Porto’s Bake at Home Experience – Strudels and Cake!

I’m really missing some Porto’s right now… I used to frequent the Glendale location for their various strudels, notably their cheese ones. I also remember trying their various cake slices/mini cakes. Pretty good! Portos Bake at Home started a while back where people can order frozen unbaked products and bake them at home. Pretty cool! The Milk Bar strawberry cake wasn’t my first cake to arrive frozen, as Portos bake at home Milk’N Berries cake was the first.

My Portos Bake at Home Order

  • A dozen guava and cheese strudels – A Porto’s Bakery Original! Puff pastry with Porto’s signature cream cheese filling and guava jam.
  • An 8″ Milk’N Berries cake – A Porto’s Original! Sponge cake heavily-soaked with Rosa’s original Tres Leches (condensed milk, evaporated milk, cream, and a touch of brandy) layered with whipped cream and a blend of blueberry, strawberry, and blackberry. Finished with whipped cream on top.

Ordering and Shipping

The ordering and shipping process was simple. You select a date that you want the items to be delivered by, and it comes frozen with the dry ice and all that good stuff. They recommend that you order the cake 24 hours before the expected serving date to allow time for the cake to thaw.

Photos from my Portos Bake at Home Order

I got too excited that I didn’t take photos of the raw strudels, but oh well… enjoy – descriptions in the captions!

Easy to bake instructions to the guava cheese strudels. They were flatter and raw before baking, and this is the final product after baking. Delicious!! Great pastry and cheese and guava fillings within.
The Milk'N Berries cake was overall well-protected. There are some flattening of the cream parts on top, but the edge was nicely protected. The cake should be thawed before serving.
The side of the cake after removing the protective sheet! The layers on their website look much better, but it's the taste that counts, right? Not too impressed with the look here, but oh well... let's cut in.
Looks better on the inside! Distinct layers of the cake, cream and berries fillings, etc.

Final Comments / Overall Experience

I know Porto’s potato balls are very popular, but they’re just alright to me. I see that they have chicken empanadas as a bake at home item, and would love to try that next time I order. These strudels and the cake was shared with my family, and overall, they like the strudels more than the cake. My parents didn’t enjoy the cake for some reason, and I admit that it didn’t taste as good as the one from the store itself. The cake itself was a bit dry and was off from the tres leches I tried from the store. Someone commented that it tasted better frozen than thawed, LOL. Anyways, I took some leftovers home and served some to someone else during lunch and they thought it was alright. I’d order Porto’s Bake at Home again… can I use another $10 coupon?
