Trader Joe’s Criollo Chocolate Review

Ahh… another Trader Joe’s sweets item. I came across a TJ’s chocolate I haven’t seen before the other week – their Criollo Chocolate! The packaging felt pretty nice, and for around $3, I decided to try it out.

What is Criollo Chocolate?

I had no idea, so I looked it up and stumbled across this website.  Criollo means “local origin” and it’s a very high quality cocoa bean. I’ve heard of Valrhona chocolate, and that’s an example of Criollo. It supposedly lacks bitterness, and the dark chocolates are rather tasty with a good amount of light creaminess and rich in flavor.

Packaging and Ingredients

Nice high quality packaging for the chocolate to match its cocoa bean quality. The packaging is rather smooth. There is no seal, so clip the packaging if the chocolate doesn’t get consumed in one sitting. Ingredients contain cocoa mass and cane sugar.

Taste and Quality

The Criollo chocolate snaps easily and the snap is rather satisfying. I think it’s best to consume the chocolate in a day because the texture changes after several days. Perhaps it wasn’t sealed all the way, but the first impression in regards to taste and texture was excellent. 80% cocoa, so it’s really a dark chocolate. It tastes like one too, as expected.

Would I Buy Again?

Yeah! I prefer dark chocolate over milk and white chocolates. $3 for something small may seem like much, but it’s “on par” with other chocolates out there that are pricier.
