Wagyu Tasting Experience @ Gozu SF

There are so many spots I’d love to try in the city, and Gozu in SF has been on my list for a while. One of my cousin’s birthdays was happening, so I asked if we were all free for dinner after work to try some wagyu skewers and whiskey. So glad the 4 of us could make it!

The Gozu Experience

Gozu SF has a tasting menu that includes various things plus some Wagyu, but we opt’d for their stick bar menu since there was more Wagyu to try from that menu. We were seated at the bar, and were given the stick bar menu, plus a tablet of their alcoholic beverages. I’ve read some reviews that they were able to order other items as well, so I’ve inquired about that, and depending on availability, some of the tasting menu items were available a la carte. The Wagyu uni toast caught our eye, so we each got one of those, along with the various Wagyu skewers.

Different Wagyu Cuts Taste Different!

There were indications re the tenderness to each cut of the fancy beef, but I had no idea how different each cut can be! I suppose most Wagyu I’ve had previously were very similar cuts, so they all tasted very similar to each other and had similar textures, but Gozu SF gave me a whole different perspective of this stuff. 

Whiskeys / Pairings

There are many different drinks at Gozu SF, including a variety of Japanese whiskeys. We decided to get a flight, and I also got my usual gin n tonic.

Chef’s Choice

We had no idea what cuts we wanted to try, so we ordered a couple orders of the 5 chef choice skewers to start. We did start with the uni wagyu toast, which was perfection. 

 

Wagyu uni toast. Fatty toast with fatty wagyu and uni. Such an amazing bite! If these weren’t so pricey, we would have gotten many more rounds of these.
3 of our 5 skewers arrived first, and the presentation included the salts and such for flavoring the skewers. They didn’t need more seasonings, but it was nice to have as well. I completely forgot which cuts they gave us, but we did enjoy some more than others. We were amazed by how different they all tasted from each other!
The other 2 skewers arrived. They didn’t give all 5 at once because the skewers were meant to be enjoyed warm and super fresh.

The Beauty of Wagyu – Don’t need too Much

We had no idea how many skewers to get, so we started with 5 to get a feel. The people said a lot of people would feel they’ve had enough with 4 skewers, and some would have upwards of 10. That’s pricey LOL. 

We already tried 5 different types of cuts, and we also ordered another chef choice set of 3 and requested they be cuts we haven’t tried before. Awesome stuff!

All those fatty skewers, that buttery-like toast with more wagyu and stuff… all so wonderful and our tastebuds definitely had an amazing party! 

Dessert?

Of course! They had tallow cookies and coconut sorbet, and we decided to try the tallow cookies! Cookies made of the wagyu fat LOL. More fatty deliciousness stuff.

Beef Fat Cookies

Sounds so bad, but they were rich and delicious. Double chocolate chunk isn’t a cookie I typically enjoy, but these were pretty great. 

Worth It?

Super pricey, but wagyu is pricey in general. I think it was worth it for the food and the experience, but not for an everyday thing since I definitely felt a bit of pain on the sides and back that night/the next morning from all that fat content. It was amazing how the different cuts taste so different and had a variety of textures compared to each other. I’d def go back and try other stuff though!
