Tasting Menu at Commis Review – My Omakase Birthday Dinner!

Commis – 2 Michelin Star Restaurant (at time of December 2022)

A fancy dinner at Oakland. My brother was really generous to treat me and our parents to dinner at Commis. It was my parents’ first time having omakase/tasting menu in this kind of style. It was a nice experience overall.

Type of Food / Menu

Commis seems really influenced since there were French and Asian themes here. Many of the “main course” dishes had some kind of Asian flavor, such as mushroom congee or horseradish/wasabi dashi. The desserts (many of them!) was very French – reminded us of Joel Robuchon. Even some knives used here matched the ones my brother used in France.

Very nice table and atmosphere. I really enjoyed it.

Omakase Options

There are a couple main dining options at Commis – table seating or bar seating. Bar seating seems really chill, menu, etc. I didn’t see the bar menu, but based on what I’ve seen online, it’s $75+ depending on options. Table seating is the standard tasting menu for $275 per person (December 2022). There are options to add supplements (truffle) and wine pairing options. We did table and now enjoy my photos of the food. Descriptions and thoughts on the captions.

Cheers! We got the Commis Old Fashioned (cognac, maple, bergamot, angostura) and the Daffy (duck fat-washed Armagnac, Sauternes, lillet). Amazing square ice cubes with the restaurant name! Drinks were pretty good.
Sea bream with sunchoke & charred leeks oil, preserved yuzu citrus. Yum, raw fish! Smooth, not fishy at all, just the way it should be. Flavorful sauce as well. Pretty good.
Kaluga caviar with parsley root, French sorrel & dill. One of our favorite ones. Creamy, rich, but just the right amount. So beautiful as well.

How We Felt After The Above Courses / Before Dessert

My mom was starting to feel full, but the rest of us could continue to eat quite a bit more. We were looking forward to dessert, and the number of desserts was pretty amazing! Let’s take a look.

End of the Meal

My favorite things here was the oyster, the caviar dish, and the dessert with absinthe. The sea bream and other desserts were pretty good as well. My least favorites were the congee and the salad. I liked how it wasn’t too much food, but wouldn’t mind if there was more. The meal itself was pricey and it probably wasn’t worth it on ingredients alone, but the atmosphere, service, and utilsils were very nice. They changed utensils throughout each course so you don’t really have to think about what to use to eat the dish and it keeps everything clean.

Would I Go Back?

I’d love to try the bar seating at some point! Price is more reasonable and I know that the drinks are not disappointing. I love how they gave a menu at the end that summarizes our courses because I couldn’t remember all of it or understood most of what was said about the dishes. Personally I prefer the Japanese style tasting menus a bit more, but this was a fun one too. Super impressed with the oyster and the absinthe dessert. Can I get those separately at the bar?
