Fresh Daith Piercing Experience and BVLA Jewelry Review

This post is about my daith piercing experience, a continuation from this post’s pre-piercing consultation. Headline photo taken from BVLA’s website here. Such beautiful inspiration!

Piercing Consultation

I walked into the local APP (Association of Professional Piercers) approved location and was greeted by the owners. BVLA jewelry filled the display cases and there was a door that leads to the piercing room. My appointment was for brunch time Friday the 13th, and I wanted to know what kind of piercings would be great for my ears, so more of an anatomy check. I’ve been leaning toward getting some done on my left ear, though I sleep on my left side, but I felt more comfortable getting it on my left than my right. Anyways, the piercer took a photo of my ear and talked to me about what would fit and how the piercings generally heal, such as the timeframe and how exposed the area is, etc. I definitely learned so much!

Jewelry Galore!

We know BVLA jewelry is adorable and expensive, but what we’ve seen online looks a bit more blown up. The pieces are quite dainty and there was so much to choose from! The piercer placed some jewelry on various spots of my ear to see how those would look. I’ve initially wanted something along the lines of a lower helix position a bit above my upper lobe, but my ear shape doesn’t do to well with the longer than a simple stud jewelry, so the piercer convinced me that a flat by the forward helix position would look great, and smaller jewelry did look amazing for that! Some pieces similar to the pieces from the BVLA website are below.

For the Non-Daith Cartilage Piercing

The fern and feather and other long ones were so amazing and I was bummed that they aren’t compatible with my left ear. I was told I can do that on my right, so maybe after my left heals, I’ll look into a rook and a cartilage on my right ear, or maybe I want to add to my left. I learned I was more fond of the shapes with points

Settled on the Flat, now onto the Daith Jewelry!

I love the longer design above and there were some floral ones I fell in love with too. Those were out of the question, so I picked a small green one that’ll stay in place as the piercing heals. The mini AJ one above is really cute too, but the ones similar at the store were more one-note in terms of the stones. Now the exciting part… the Daith! Below are some similar ones from the store, taken from the BVLA site.

Magic of BVLA Jewelry and Initial Piercing Pieces

Hypoallergenic for the win. I was told that all the BVLA pieces were fine for initial piercing jewelry because of the material, which is amazing because if you’re keeping a piece of jewelry in for 6+ months straight (perhaps over a year for me), you’d want the piece to look amazing. BVLA does just that!

Suitable/Recommended Daith Piercing Initial Jewelry

I fell in love with the Amity ring, but the only one in gold (my preference) was a smaller ring, not recommended for an initial piercing because there won’t be as much room in case the piercing area gets swollen and such. There were other rings with a small space, such as the Tesseract, and same issue… not much room in case of swelling. More surface on the rings such as the Oceane 3 is more suitable for initial piercings for that reason. I knew I wanted a gold ring with some color if not the Amity ring, and I did find one I really liked!

The Moment You’ve Been Waiting For – The Daith Piercing Experience and Overall Piercing Experience!

My appointment was just for a consultation, but after looking at the jewelry and stuff, the piercer asked if I wanted to get pierced today. There was room, so I decided I would to avoid another trip next week or something. I went into the piercing room and he put the jewelry in an autoclave to sterilize it. That process takes around 6 minutes. Below are some bullet points of what went down in that piercing room!

  • Filled out some paperwork (QR code, phone) while the piercer preps and sterilizes the jewelry. Straight forward, acknowledging over age of 18, not under the influence, allergies, knowledge that the body changes, risks, etc.
  • Once the above is done, the piercer marks the ear. He looks at it closely and again farther away to ensure it looks good regardless of how close or far you are. He had me look in the mirror to confirm as well. He also talks about the piercings such as a daith piercing is having a lot of pressure whereas the other cartilage ones are more of a pinch.
  • He decides to do the daith one first so that the flat/cartilage one wouldn’t be touched. He then has me lay down on the station (similar to the doctor office table thingy) on the side.

Daith Piercing Time!

I am so damn glad I wasn’t asked to look at the needles or the piercing supply stuff because I’m terrified of needles. It’s more mental if anything since they don’t hurt much, but that mental image of a needle scares me. He puts the ring on to measure and then he pierces through that part of the ear. Wow, that was practically painless! I’ve had dental work and LASIK done that was more painful and felt more pressure than the daith piercing. He then inserted the jewelry and said that I didn’t bleed much. Then afterwards, he said oh, the blood is now, a delayed reaction LOL. The stuff he put to calm it felt pretty good. Not a bad experience!

Cartilage/Flat/Close to Forward Helix Area Time!

I was feeling a mild throbbing pain (very mild!) as he was getting things ready for my next piercing. He then did the next piercing, and holy moly, what a difference! The cartilage one hurt, but the pain was rather quick. I did not curse, but had to kick my feet a bit. Overall, not too bad!

Took a quick selfie as I walked out of the piercing studio
Snapped a snap to send to some friends. Pretty cool, huh?

Aftercare and Such

I thought I’d hear more on aftercare, but it’s actually quite straight forward! Do not touch or play with, twist, move, and such the piercings! Spray some saline mist spray front and back of the ears a couple times a day. Blow-dry after showering. I can even have my hair down all the time too. Amazing!! Really hoping these will heal smoothly and that they do not migrate or reject, etc.

Pricing and Such

OK, so this is painful. My laptop broke and I was going to buy another laptop or at least a tablet with a keyboard to not risk having another flexgate situation (damn it, macbook pro!). Instead, I use that money to get these 2 piercings and the jewelry. Yep, that’s now much this cost. BVLA jewelry can range quite a bit, with most of it in the $300 – $800 range. Very simple ones can be less, and there definitely are pieces over $1,000.

Follow-up and Downsizing

I got my 4 week follow up scheduled and the jewelry may be downsized then. Cartilage piercings are pierced with a longer rod in case swelling and such occurs. This may cause some movement, so when the piercing heals after some time, the rod would be switched or cut shorter to help with healing. Will prob provide some updates here and there, as this is just the first day of having these piercings done. Fingers crossed!
