Hello Fresh – Week 2 Experience and Discount

Week 1 Experience and Intro

Please check out my Week 1 and Intro experience with Hello Fresh meals. I’ll dive right into my week 2 experience and recipes I’ve tried while the discount is still active. 🙂

Discounts

Hello Fresh meals discounts are spread throughout 4 weeks, with the first week with the biggest discounts. It was around $24 shipped for 3 meals ($40 off). Week 2 was $43 shipped for 3 meals ($20 off), and week 3 will be the same price as week 2 ($20 off). Week 4 will be $53 shipped ($10 off), and subsequent weeks will be full price at $63 shipped for 3 meals.

First Week 2 Hello Fresh Meal – Sloppy Joes

The headliner photo shows the 3 recipes we received this week. The first one we tried was the Ancho BBQ Sloppy Joes with Pickle Slices and Oven Gold Potatoes. The ingredients not included in the delivery were simple enough, just salt, pepper, and some vegetable oil.

Thoughts on the Sloppy Joe

The meat tasted pretty good with the slight BBQ flavor. I thought it could have used more BBQ flavor, but that’s because I really like BBQ. The oven roasted gold potato slices were rather plain so I dunked those in ketchup. They weren’t really crispy either. The sloppy joe itself was good, but it didn’t really stand out. I’m not a big fan of pickles, but I ate all the ones on my plate since I wanted to get the full experience of the dish. I think a slaw may have been better on this burger, but the pickles did add a nice crunch to the sloppy joe.

Second Week 2 Hello Fresh Meal – Sweet Chili Pork Bowl

The second recipe we tried during week 2 was the Sweet Chili Pork Bowl with Bell Peppers and Candied Peanuts. Ingredients to this one looked really simple that we can recreate this one easily if we choose to have this again.

Thoughts on the Sweet Chili Pork Bowl

This isn’t a dish we would normally cook, and it was surprisingly delicious! There was some sweetness to it, and I could have used a lot more spicy, but the flavors were there. The textures were pretty good with the crunch from the peanuts, though I think they could have been roasted a bit more. There’s a good amount of color from the dish from the peppers and lime and such. The lime looks a bit out of place, and I didn’t enjoy squeezing the lime, but it did give the dish the acidity it needed. Rice is usually just filler, but this rice was decent. The bit of sauce from the sweet chili pork gave it some flavor, so I actually ate all the rice since it wasn’t plain.

Third Week 2 Hello Fresh Meal – Shawarma-Spiced Chicken

The third and final recipe we tried this week was the Shawarma-Spiced Chicken with Persian Salad, Rice & Creamy Dill Sauce. This one tasted rather healthy and light compared to the other 2 recipes we tried for our week 2 hello fresh meals. The spices used in this dish are similar to other dishes we made, but this one felt a lot lighter.

Thoughts on the Shawarma-Spiced Chicken

The portion to this dish seemed much smaller than the other 2 recipes we tried during week 2. It didn’t fill me up by any means, which was disappointing and reminded me a lot of week 1’s chicken we tried. The flavors were decent, but a bit mild in my opinion. Rice and salad were good, but the dish itself could have used a lot more acid. It was probably the healthiest recipe we tried during week 2, but it’s on the bottom in terms of flavor. Perhaps because I really like bold spice, so this one tasted extremely mild to me in comparison to the other 2 recipes.

Final Comments

Week 3 will be the last week we will try hello fresh meals during this subscription. Paying $53 for week 4 and $63 full priced for 3 meals / 6 servings for us just doesn’t seem worth it since we can get takeout for a similar price without spending an hour in the kitchen. Week 2’s hello fresh meals were decent, and again, I love how they include recipe cards in the box and on their website so that we can re-create these items if we wanted.
