Omakase at Sasa in SF Japantown. Reasonably Priced and Delicious!

If I had the time, the money, and am in ideal health, I’d most likely would like to have delicious omakase everyday. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have that time and money, and my blood readings aren’t ideal. Anyways, I enjoy my fancy omakases when I get a chance.

Sasa – Japantown SF

Link here. Some friends were visiting the Bay Area and we were going to hang out in Japantown, wander around other parts of SF, and do an escape room. I saw a reasonably priced “authentic” Japanese restaurant online that accepted lunch reservations so I made a reservation for 5 for a Sunday and Noon. Usually omakases are during dinners (or only opened for dinner), but the Sasa omakase is available during lunch, so that’s what we all got.

The Sasa Omakase Menu. We added the supplement too because that just sounds to be the best part!

Sasa Omakase for All

They came a long way, and I like great food and company, so we all got the Sasa omakase, along with the supplement. Total would be $125 pre tax and tip per person. So cheap compared to Nobu, The Shota, and Akiko’s! Now enjoy the below photos and captions!

Zensai - assorted small plates. A bite of eggplant, a squid-like thing, and a broth/palette cleanser. The bite of eggplant was really interesting in a great way. It was sushi-like, not a traditional eggplant thing. The top item was good in texture, nice mix there. The broth/palette cleanser was really good. Nice acidity and flavor to there with some gelatinous bits.
Sashimi - assorted. I wished I took notes to what everything was, but this looks to be some kind of snapper and trout. Anyways, the pieces were good. Not OMG more please good, but good enough.
Nigiri - 5 pieces of sushi of the day. These were described to us from right to left, so we ate it that way. First piece had a nice tart flavor to it. Second piece tasted much like a shiso leaf, a bit overpowering. The third piece was alright. The 4th piece was great, and the last piece was good. Ugh, so mad at myself for not documenting what was what here!
Nigiri - 5 pieces of signature sushi. OMG YES!!! This plate of nigiri looks better than the first plate. All these also tasted much better than their standard nigiri. Just as the prior plate, these were pre seasoned/sauced, so we just ate them as-is. The first piece, tuna tartare with the seaweed and such, was really good. Amazing first start to this plate. Next piece was squid. Good texture, not as great as the first piece. Third piece was very lemon-y. 4th piece (wagyu) was excellent, and 5th piece of fish was pretty good as well. SO GOOD!!
The Supplement for an additional $35 - O-toro with caviar, A5 Wagyu, Uni spoon, and tamago. The best plate all lunch! We started with the otoro with caviar and it was how it should have been. Yumness. Then the wagyu - wow, that marbling. Not the most melt in your mouth I've had, but the smokiness and such was delicious. The uni spoon had the uni over rice and some salmon roe. Take it in one bite and everything meshes so well together. Tamago (egg) was last as it's dessert-like. Pretty standard there.
Chawanmushi - steamed egg custard. Steamed egg with some shrimp. The shrimp was a bit over in my opinion, but it was still good. The steam egg custard was smooth and the broth was full of flavor.
Akadashi - red miso soup! Miso soup for the last course (ignore the chawanmushi here) instead of first course is rather neat. Some of us drank all of it, but some others weren't really a fan of miso in general. I'd say more for me, but that'd just be rude of me.

Sasa Omakase Overview

$125 ($90 for the regular + $35 supplement) per person wasn’t bad for this considering other omakase cost. A 20% gratuity was automatically added because we were a party of 5 or more. We all enjoyed our time here and loved how the Sasa omakase was more raw fish focused. It wasn’t the most filling omakase as we had room to share a clam chowder bread bowl by Pier 39 a bit after this. I would come back to try Sasa’s other items, more often if I lived close by.
