Mizumi Review – Lovely Dinner @ the Wynn in Vegas!

Our final meal during our Vegas after Christmas trip was at Mizumi at the Wynn. We stayed at the Venetian, so the Wynn was really close by. So interesting how during this trip, besides going to the MGM Grand, we mostly walked to nearly casinos – Aria, Park MGM, Wynn, etc. Anyways, Mizumi was so enjoyable as the design and view, as well as the food, were total eye candy.

Unfortunately I didn’t get a photo of the waterfall or their interior, but everything here made sense in terms of decor.

Family Style

I love ordering a bunch of stuff and everyone at the table shares since we then get to try a bit of everything. We were so delighted to hear that family style is the preferred way to dine at Mizumi. The plates are small-ish, and the food comes out just as the way they did at Girl & the Goat – when ever they are ready. The food comes out pretty fast compared to most other places we’ve tried during this trip, so it’s rather efficient here.

Menu Style

We didn’t see an omakase option here, which was fine. They had a bunch of various raw appetizers, some hot appetizers, grill items, rolls, and traditional sushi/sashimi options – right up my alley! I suppose it’s tapas style as each plate was small and sharable. Now let’s get started with the food!

Wild Snapper Sashimi Usuzukuri - one of their signatures and highly recommended. Saw this one a lot on Yelp that we had to try! Thin sliced Japanese maidai snapper, white soy and lime dressing, sesame seeds, konbu. Delicious!
Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna Sushi - truffle spicy mayo, sweet soy, avocado purée, Japanese “Yumepirika” rice. Not the biggest tuna fan, but these were some really amazing crispy rice pieces. There was balance to this and so many flavors between the tuna and the rice.

Ordering and Food So Far

We started off ordering a small handful of things and then ordered more after we’re about to finish the stuff that we initially ordered. Presentation is on point here so far. The snapper carpaccio and the crispy rice spicy tuna came out really fast and both were delicious. Definitely a great first experience here as our taste buds were satisfied!

Sashimi Platter - this was the expensive thing. It came with 3 pieces of 7 different varieties, chef’s choice. There were the traditional salmon, tuna, yellowtail, snapper items which were kind of boring in my opinion. The other 3 items on top were very great though - scallops, another fish (seasoned) and one more. I don’t remember what they were, but those were the highlights with this dish. Perhaps we all should have gotten separate orders of the chef’s choice nigiri since those might be a bit more interesting. The presentation here was nice - dry ice and we saw the smoke at first.
Scallop Takaki and Crispy Shrimp Roll - seared Hokkaido scallop, crunchy shrimp, cucumber, avocado, jalapeño, yuzu tobiko, citrus aioli, eel sauce. Our server said this was the best roll so we decided to try it. It did sounded better and unique compared to their other rolls, and OMG it was really good! Party of flavors and textures in our mouths.

Time for Round 2

Those 4 items were the stuff we ordered initially, and we were ready for more. We liked what we’ve had so far, which was a great sign! The only thing that was a bit disappointing for me was the sashimi plate. Description was, “chef’s selection of premium sashimi from Japan,” and the majority of it didn’t seem that premium. Generic selections and only a 2 -3 really stood out. It was all good though, including the wasabi! They really did get their raw scallops right. So good.

We ordered mushrooms (from the grill) because we really liked the maitake mushrooms from Ramsay’s Kitchen during lunch. They do seasonal mushrooms and these were alright. I liked them since I liked mushrooms, but compared to the rest of the more “fancy” items, it was just alright.
Truffle Creamy Crab Croquette - pinko crusted red crab, truffle spicy mayo, wild black truffle, sorrel salad. These were SUPER creamy on the inside, and it was real crab. Since we were having some cocktails, I felt the reaction right away so I was only able to have half a piece of one of these. Thankfully my bestie took my other half so none of this went wasted. SUPER CREAMY. No joke.
Wagyu Gyoza Dumpling - Kobe beef, Hokkaido snow beef, Japanese black vinegar soy, spicy mayo. Super juicy for beef dumplings, and so good because of that. Flavorful stuff. Didn’t need to douse it all in sauce to make it taste good. I was lucky to have more than my share of these!
Yellowtail Hamachi Carpaccio - cilantro essence, crispy shallots, fresh jalapeño, ponzu. We decided to try their other carpaccio since their signature snapper one was so pretty and delicious, and yellowtail sashimi is so darn good. This carpaccio wasn’t as good as the other one, but still tasty.

Time for Dessert!

It’s almost dessert time! The dessert menu looked pretty good, which included –

  • Mizumi Cappuccino – Bailey’s Irish Cream foam, coffee ice cream, freeze dried orange, dark chocolate mousse, chocolate chip cookies.
  • Yuzu & Passionfruit Soufflé – Japanese 100% yuzu extract, coconut ice cream, passionfruit jelly, elderflower.
  • Selection of Mochi Ice Cream- green tea, red bean, coconut, mango.
  • Min’s Golden Pavlova – Strawberries, candied orange, Japanese popping candy, yellow passionfruit purée, vanilla cream, raspberry coulis.
  • Roasted Chestnut “Mount-Fuji” – Chestnut ice cream, chestnut purée, Nikki Japanese whiskey parfait, mandarin poached pear.
  • Goma & Natsu Chocolate Fondant – Vanilla ice cream, melting peanut butter, golden nugget tangerine gel, sesame chips.
  • Sesame “Goma” Street – Hazelnut and sesame praline, toasted white chocolate mousse, banana butter crumble, black sesame ice cream.
  • Selection of Ice Creams – green tea, red bean, vanilla, chocolate.
  • Selection of sorbets – Lychee, Banana-passion, pandan, blackberry sorbet.
We chose the soufflé since it sounded good and it would be shareable! It looked amazing and it was really fluffy inside. Nice passionfruit flavors as well. The coconut ice cream was really good, and the jellies gave it nice texture. There were crumbles as well, which gave it even more texture and added to this dessert.

Yuzu Passionfruit Souffle

We went with the soufflé! The cappuccino sounded really good, but we felt it would be difficult to share and we didn’t want to order individual desserts. All of us loved the whiskey cappuccino from Nobu when we tried their tasting menu during a previous Vegas trip. The soufflé was made to order so we just chatted about random stuff and talked about the food here until our soufflé arrived. We got new silverware for it as well.

Happy Birthday

We mentioned in our reservation that we were ALL celebrating our belated birthdays here, and guess what? ALL of us got the happy birthday dessert. So nice!!! Most places gave just one if we ordered dessert (i.e. Morimoto gave one after we ordered dessert, and Ramsay’s Kitchen did not give us one as we didn’t order dessert). They also gave us a happy birthday note as well. So sweet!

Birthday treat - pistachio macaron, white chocolate “happy birthday” and some fruits. Pretty good!!
The Damage!

Worth It / Will we go Back?

I’d love to go back here and I think my friends would agree. The food here is rather pricey, but the food, service, and atmosphere was really nice. We’d love to try more of their items, and possibly one of their wagyus next time. Perhaps their chef choice sushi, which we would need to all get one since splitting a sushi piece doesn’t seem right. There are a lot of other Vegas restaurants we would want to try during subsequent trips, so we might hit those first, but we’d love to come back to Mizumi!

Cheers! Matcha Toki Tea (whiskey and matcha, mostly whiskey, and some lychee pearls, practically popping boba) and Mango Hi Chew (Mango infused rice shochu, soda, candied mango, Lime)
